Investing for Equity: Addressing the Racial Wealth Gap
100 place(s)

As attention shifts to widening global financial inequity, the United States faces long-lasting financial setbacks in its minority communities due to centuries of discriminatory policies. Historical, racially-motivated exclusion has deprived the Black community and others of opportunities for generational wealth creation available to their counterparts, such as residential mortgages. This event will feature expert panelists who will describe constructive initiatives being pursued in business to correct this inequity. Our discussion will focus on learning from organizations that have already started implementing solutions to erase economic disparities through financial investment, community development, and other wealth-building opportunities. Our panelists will then look ahead to imagine how current solutions can be expanded in scope and impact.

Revisiting the Bangladesh Accord
100 place(s)

The Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh was established in 2013 after the devastating Rana Plaza incident that killed 1,133 garment workers. Developed through a multistakeholder initiative (MSI) involving European fashion brands, labor unions, international NGOs, and government representatives, the Accord has helped protect the health and safety of garment workers to prevent another such tragedy. The Accord was renewed for a second term in 2017 and in September 2021 was replaced by the International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry. This session will look back at the Accord’s history and track record as a MSI devoted to human sustainability, and ahead to its future. In particular, the dialogue will bring light to the challenge of organizing, monitoring, and renewing MSIs, the limitations of the Accord and its successor, and the reasons why the US-brand counterpart to the Accord also adopted in 2013 (the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety) expired without renewal.
